Some weeks ago my earholes were overwhelmed — thrashed about, really — by a Chicago-based group doing good things for city scene. The perpetrator was Suns. They happened to go on after the band I came out to see at Subterranean: Caught in Your Pockets.

The evening’s takeaway was as follows: Suns is tremendously loud. Six people, sure, with two of ‘em totally trouncing upon respective drum kits.

So four guitars and two drums. Like two bands deciding it a good idea to marry and then, you know, play shows together.

Late last year Suns ran a successful campaign on Kickstarter — yeah! — and its fans are now realizing the fruits of their moneys. Suns’ forthcoming debut full-length, When We Were Us, appeared on Bandcamp this week and one of the few tracks you can now stream — “Strangeland” — is one I’ve listened to regularly.

Suns gave me access to When We Were Us in full a few days ago, but for now, my attention’s been dominated by “Strangeland.” It, I think, captures what I think so awesome about Suns. They’re noisy, yes, but blended with hushed sensibilities when the instrumentals break for Mikey’s vocals.
